““You’re not a monster,” I said. But I lied. What I really wanted to say was that a monster is not such a terrible thing to be. From the Latin root monstrum, a divine messenger of catastrophe, then adapted by the Old French to mean an animal of myriad origins: centaur, griffin, satyr. To be a monster is to be a hybrid signal, a lighthouse: both shelter and warning at once.”— Ocean Vuong, from On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous.

This could be the international flag of planet Earth
Designed by Oskar Pernefeldt, this proposal for a flag that represents our entire planet could have a future on Mars.
Centered in the flag, seven rings form a flower – a symbol of the life on Earth. The rings are linked to each other, which represents how everything on our planet, directly or indirectly, are linked. The blue field represents water which is essential for life – also as the oceans cover most of our planet’s surface. The flower’s outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the universe.
YES! This is good! 2d flags depictiing the Earth itself necessarily have to privilege a hemisphere (like at least the UN flag is north-pole centric but that still fucks over South America and large parts of Africa and Australia). But this is good. Blue for the sky, blue for the sea, blue for default-good-guy color. Flower for life, flower for peace. Interlocked rings for unity, seven for continents. I like this flag. I would carry this flag to other worlds in peace. Hell yeah.
Can we call it the Terran Alliance? Languages that doesn’t translate as well could go ‘Earth Alliance’. I just want to leave it open to include non-human intelligences from Earth, be they artificial or uplifted animals so ‘Human Alliance’ is a no-go for me.
